EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) –Hundreds of community members filled downtown Evansville’s YMCA for a good cause. The fifth annual Young Leaders United (YLU) Dodgeball Tournament got pretty intense as 28 teams competed for the trophy. Young Leaders United Committee member Lee Riddle said the event raised $11,000 that will go towards three United Way Born Learning Trails community. He said the trails will help boost a child’s language and literacy skills through fun and games. It uses stencils on the sidewalk to help the kids be interactive with their parents and be educational for them. “In Garvin Park, our goal is to have Spanish and English signs because we know there is a lot of Latino festivals that go on around Garvin Park,” said Riddle. Riddle said people get pretty competitive and have even started wearing themed costumes for the tournament. “We want to get involved with the community, that’s number one, but also it’s just a great time,” said Scarafia. From year to year, the event keeps on growing. “I mean we’re hoping to have even more next year where we have to go to a bigger facility,” said Riddle. He explained they have enough money now to fund their trails project which they hope to start in the Spring.
