U.S. unemployment is down and jobs are going unfilled. But for people without much education, the real question is: Do those jobs pay enough to live on? Vanessa Solivan and her three children fled their last place in June 2015, after a young man was shot and killed around the corner. They found a floor to sleep on in Vanessa’s parents’ home on North Clinton Avenue in East Trenton. It wasn’t a safer neighborhood, but it was a known one. Vanessa took only what she could cram into her station wagon, a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, letting the bed bugs have the rest. FULL STORY

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Hundreds of people went out into the community Friday to help their neighbors for the 25th annual Evansville’s United Way Day of Caring. More than 1,200 volunteers showed up for the kickoff breakfast. They were inspired by guest speaker and UE Men’s Basketball Coach Walter McCarty. FULL STORY

After a hard day's work, the United Way's 25th annual Day of Caring is complete. Many businesses lended their employees for this one day, to volunteer at non-profits across Vanderburgh, Warrick and Spencer counties. On September 7th, United Way will celebrate its 25th Annual Day of Caring. On that day, we will bring together more than one thousand volunteers, who will lend a hand to 50 local nonprofit organizations in Vanderburgh, Warrick and Spencer Counties, by helping with projects both inside and outdoors. The United Way of Southwestern Indiana will offer free tax preparation through its VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program for individuals and families with an annual household income of $54,000 or less. Through the VITA program, IRS certified volunteers will provide free basic tax return preparation via electronic filing. Volunteers screen taxpayers for special tax credits at five locations. The Evansville Teacher’s Federal Credit Union presented a gift to the United Way. The total goal was $25,000, but the credit union and its employees presented a check totaling $44,625. The United Way said its thankful to see the community effort and support. Amy Canterbury said, “It’s really warming to see an entire company to come together for the community. EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -Hundreds of community members filled downtown Evansville's YMCA for a good cause. The fifth annual Young Leaders United (YLU) Dodgeball Tournament got pretty intense as 28 teams competed for the trophy. Young Leaders United Committee member Lee Riddle said the event raised $11,000 that will go towards three United Way Born Learning Trails community. He said the trails will help boost a child's language and literacy skills through fun and games. It uses stencils on the sidewalk to help the kids be interactive with their parents and be educational for them. "In Garvin Park, our goal is to have Spanish and English signs because we know there is a lot of Latino festivals that go on around Garvin Park," said Riddle.
