VITA Program

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program offers free tax preparation and e-filing services to individuals and families with an annual household income at or below $54,000.  VITA tax preparers are certified by the IRS to ensure that clients receive all eligible Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Child Tax Credits.  In addition, clients save money by not having to pay fees associated with tax preparation.  Through the VITA program, we help hard-working individuals and families in our community take advantage of their tax dollars and reinvest their returns back into Southwestern Indiana.  This year, 925 tax returns were filed through our VITA program, generating $1,536,487 in state and federal refunds.  Many clients used their tax refunds to pay bills, add to their savings accounts, purchase homes, and make home or car repairs.  The VITA program depends heavily on a group of local volunteers who donate their time during tax season.  This year, 55 volunteers donated 1,320 hours of service with the VITA program.

We need VITA volunteers for the 2019 tax season.

As a VITA volunteer, you have an immediate impact on the lives of the people served through this free tax prep program.  No prior tax preparation experience is necessary, and volunteer times are flexible.  Volunteers receive free training and are certified by the IRS to ensure all families and individuals who are served through the VITA program receive all eligible tax credits and deductions.  Currently, we need volunteers to fill the following positions:

  • Greeters
  • Preparers
  • Site Coordinators
  • Supply Clerks
  • Story Collectors
